UT Physicians coordinates care delivery via Greater Houston Healthconnect

Greater Houston Healthconnect (Healthconnect) announces that UT Physicians, the medical group practice of McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), came live early this year in one of the country’s largest and most robust health information exchanges. UT Physicians now shares and accesses clinical information across participating entities for patients who have authorized sharing their medical information.

UT Physicians is connecting seamlessly to other Healthconnect participating providers’ EHRs. In Houston, where many large health systems use disparate EHR systems, this is a particularly important milestone because the single interface to Healthconnect enables the group practice to exchange records with any other institution participating in the HIE.

“Sharing and accessing patient information through this secure exchange allows UT Physicians to see a more robust picture of our patients’ medical histories, engendering efficient and safe continuity of care,” said Ryan Walsh, M.D., M.M.M., chief medical information officer for UTHealth.

Nick Bonvino, CEO for Healthconnect, praised the organization and noted the significance of this event. “UT Physicians is to be commended for putting quality of care and patient safety first. Over 1,400 physicians sharing patient records with other caregivers will dramatically improve the level of care coordination across the region.”

Healthconnect is in an intense period of implementations that will result in a majority of healthcare systems live and interoperable by the fall of this year.
