Seven startups showcased their medical technology to a room of 15 judges at JLABS @ TMC on May 4, 2016.

The companies, with ties to TMCx Accelerator or TMC Biodesign, were vying to be one of 20 companies worldwide that MedTech Innovator will take to the AdvaMed 2016 conference later this year.

“This puts companies like yours in front of people in your ecosystem,” Paul Grand, managing director of Research Corporation Technologies, told the audience during his opening remarks.

Grand founded the MedTech Innovator program and has managed it since 2013. It serves as a global competition and virtual accelerator for the medical technology industry.

So far, about 150 companies have applied for these pitch events, which take place across the country, Grand said.

“We are looking for companies that can transform health care,” he added. “We match the collective industry needs with startups, and it is the list of themes they are looking for in their technology that drive this program. The startup teams here fit those areas and are also companies that we wanted a closer look at.”

Companies that pitched include:

Adient Medical – inferior vena cava filters to prevent pulmonary embolism.

Decisio – patient dashboard for the clinical care team.

GreenLight Medical – platform for medical technology purchases.

IntuiTap – medical device for more accurate spinal punctures.

Noninvasix – neonatal brain oxygenation monitoring.

nView Medical – 3D imaging for surgeries.

Saranas – medical device to detect bleeding in catheterization procedures.

The process to find the 20 companies started in February, and the application deadline is May 15.

“The idea is get a lot of input from the ecosystem,” Grand said. “We are not just trying to find companies in Boston or San Francisco — we want to get out and find innovation, and Houston is one of the new hubs.”

Following this event, MedTech Innovator will be looking at all of the companies and will choose the 20 companies that will go on to the AdvaMed conference in October for a chance to compete in the finals to win $250,000 in prizes.
