Texas Medical Center Innovation Institute Selects 2016 Digital Health Companies

3 Minute Read

On Monday, January 25, 12 companies specializing in digital health were welcomed into the second installment of TMCx—the accelerator program that serves as one of the core components of the Texas Medical Center’s (TMC) Innovation Institute.

The second year of the TMCx program marks a notable change: each class will focus on a specialized subset of health care innovation, with two classes participating each year. From January through June 2016, the 13 companies will focus on digital health. From August through December 2016, a third class of companies will focus on medical devices.

“We believe the potential synergy of bringing 12 companies together, each of them focused on different aspects of digital health care innovation, will lead to unpredictable associations, collaborations and greater acceleration for each company,” said Erik M. Halvorsen, Ph.D., director of the TMC Innovation Institute. “TMCx companies have access to the largest collection of top physicians, scientists and business expertise on one campus, which serves over 7.2 million patients annually. The new program structure will make the best use of these important resources.”

Throughout the day, the companies were immersed in orientation sessions, introductions and presentations, in addition to the opportunity to pitch their solutions to both their peers and Texas Medical Center leadership. Representing a diverse spectrum of technologies—from a virtual nursing platform to diagnostic tools for clinical decision support—and equally broad ambitions, the companies are uniquely positioned to address digital health needs throughout the medical center and beyond.

“Our overall vision is to help Houston, and the Texas Medical Center in particular, be a serious, global competitor in the life science world or innovation and commercialization,” added Robert C. Robbins, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the Texas Medical Center. “The start of that is happening right here at the TMCx accelerator and throughout the TMC Innovation Institute, thanks to companies like these.”
