7th Annual UTHealth Psychiatry Update – Innovations in Trauma Research and Practice: Exploring PTSD and Related Outcomes Across the Lifespan

1 Minute Read

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences invites all mental health professionals from across the country to join us at our UTHealth Psychiatry Update. This year’s focus is on innovations in trauma research and practice.

Traumatic experiences are highly prevalent in society. In a significant portion of the child and adult population, traumatic events are related to deleterious short- and long-term biological, psychological, and behavioral sequelae. Many trauma- and loss-related experiences begin in childhood and appear to co-occur and accumulate over time, resulting in cumulative harmful effects across the lifespan. Significant progress has been made with regard to understanding the biopsychosocial impact of trauma on various mental health outcomes, particularly PTSD. However, the field is in need of research that can help to identify the influence of traumatic events on distinct psychiatric outcomes and the various individual and contextual factors that may affect trajectories of risk, resilience, and recovery. Such studies can serve as the foundation for the development and refinement of trauma-focused interventions by targeting specific factors and processes associated with reductions in PTSD and related psychiatric sequelae. This conference will present findings from innovative research and theoretical advancements focusing on trauma-exposed youth and adults to guide clinicians in the most effective, evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches for this important population.
