#KITALK Mick Cornett: Improving a City’s Health

In 2007, fueled by his own 42-pound weight loss, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett put his city on a diet to help change its culture of obesity. His commitment to improving the health of his community led to the investment of nearly $2 billion in schools and quality-of-life infrastructure through its innovative capital improvement program (MAPS). That investment generated nearly $6 billion in private sector investment. Today, Oklahoma City’s economy is one of the nation’s most robust, and the downtown has witnessed a revival in walkability. Cornett will explain how his city completed a major transformation, and he’ll offer advice to other cities pursuing a similar vision.
