Meet the CPRIT Leadership Team!

TMC invites you to meet the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Leadership Team, which issues $3 billion in bonds to fund innovative cancer prevention and research programs in Texas.  After securing new leadership, the state agency has found stability and resumed its important mission.

Attend this event to learn about the purpose of CPRiT, its near-future projects, and funding opportunities. Not only will you have the chance to hear from CPRiT’s executive team, you will have the chance to have a Q&A session with the group.

Speaker Bios

Wayne Roberts was named Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) in November 2013 after serving nearly a year as the Interim Executive Director. Wayne was initially retained to stabilize the state agency which had undergone a series of operational crises and experienced legislative and public criticism throughout 2012.  Prior to four years with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston as Associate Vice President for Public Policy, Wayne’s career was weighted towards public finance and budget, especially with respect to higher education. He held numberous senior positions under Governer Rick Perry and and served Governor George W. Bush as Deputy and Acting State Budget Director. He was Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock’s special assistant for budget and human services following 18 years with the Legislative Budget Board.

Dr. Rebecca Garcia is CPRIT’s Chief Prevention and Communications Officer. She directs CPRIT’s prevention program and fosters collaboration among the cancer and disease prevention community to maximize CPRIT’s impact. Previously she served as Vice President, Continuing Professional Development, for Physicians’ Education Resource (PER), a medical education and communications company. Dr. Garcia was also Vice President of Health Sciences for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and managed Komen’s research grants and education programs. She obtained a master’s degree in instructional design from the department of Biomedical Communications at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas and a doctorate in adult education from the Department of Higher Education at the University of North Texas.

Dr. Thomas Goodman is CPRIT’s Chief Product Development Officer. Dr. Goodman oversees CPRIT’s portfolio of research and development grants directed toward commercial products.  Prior to joining CPRIT, Dr. Goodman was Vice President of Business Development at Arizona Technology Enterprises, the technology transfer office of the Arizona State University.  Prior to that, he was Vice President of Diagnostics at Valeo Medical where he directed the development of the company’s immunoassay technology.  Earlier he was a Director at Research Corporation Technologies where he participated in the selection and evaluation process for new venture investments and was responsible for out-licensing technologies. Dr. Goodman joined the CPRIT team in April of 2014.
